INSPIRATION - JEFF BUCKLEY
This is only the second time that I’ve ever posted a photo that wasn’t mine. I cannot find who the photographer is, but this image has always stuck with me.
I think as a portrait photographer, your goal is to to capture the essence of someone’s character or mood in a single shot at a specific moment. I listen to Jeff Buckley’s music and view this picture and they capture the same thing- rapturous joy.
There are touchstones in many of our lives - Salinger, Kerouac, Dylan and Nick Drake are just a few. These gifts keep us afloat in the best and worst of times. Jeff Buckley is one of those. You will be transported by a Romantic with a capital R, a passionate voice that will, using all the multi-octaves in his vocal quiver, deliver such overwhelming joy and piercing heartbreak within moments of one another. It was these extremes in his music that were an expression of who he was- dramatic, flamboyant and a little reckless. This is beautifully captured in this portrait. Unfortunately, his mercurial nature led him to swim in the current of the murky Mississippi river, while in Nashville Tennessee to record his second album. Beneath the surface, a notorious undertow lurked, pulling him under. He drowned just shy of his 31st birthday.
Do yourself a favor and listen to his one complete studio album, Grace. You will not regret it.
